Workshops

The main workshops at MPMS cover all aspects of what might be called manual arts.  Thess are most obviously woodwork and metalwork while other activities requiring similar tools or facilities can also be carried out – there’s even been a wooden boat constructed here.

Most obvious in the woodworking area are table saws, mitre saws, planar, routers, lathes, a thicknesser and a drum sander as a sample.  But browse around and you will find a full array of hand tools (both electric and purely hand operated) with all the bits, sheets and accessories needed for these devices.

The metalwork shop contains all the welding gear including MIG, Oxy Acetylene, stick (arc) and a plasma cutter.  Machining can be done on a lathe, drill press, horizontal mill, cut off saw and hand held angle grinders.  Put these together with various bending, guillotine, vice and anvil resources and this can be a hive of activity if your project involves metal. Of course there is the full array of spanners, files, taps and dies and all those tools you expect to find in a fully equipped metal shop.

Both areas have a stock of materials for use by members (for a fee if it’s a major item) and for manufacturing Shed projects which are a major source of income for MPMS.  There is also a full array of fixings, accessories and products to support fabrication, again for a fee if it’s a major project.  Broadly if an item is smaller than 2 Metres long then it should be capable of being made at MPMS.

The gardening area provides activities for the green-thumbed Members of the Shed.  This group grow plants to help raise revenue at the annual Craft Market and other events where fund-raising can be conducted.  The garden consists of a small shaded area, watering systems, many pots and the basic tools for the group’s activities.

The Group meets on a Monday morning and new participants are always welcome. Mike Ansell.

The designation of an area as a workshop is based purely on what members want to do.  There are some who follow a technology/radio/electronics interest (there’s a 3D printer & a CNC Router in the Shed); and there’s a heavy duty sewing machine for stitching canvas, vinyl, etc.  So space is usually available for whatever members need in a collaborative atmosphere to support our purposes in being part of Mosman Park Men’s Shed.
